Imbalanced Rod

When discussing levers, forces, moments etc. at any level this apparatus provides a science puzzle which opens the opportunity for discussion. A 15mm wooden dowel rod, 1 metre long is loaded with a lead plug at one end so that its centre of mass is about 30cm from one end. It can be supported on two fingers initially, 30cm in from each end and then one can be removed without the rod falling. A second, unmodified dowel, identical in appearance to the first, is supplied so that a “magic” show can be developed around the idea.
