The set allows you to calculate the heat of combustion and the energy generated inside a calorimeter. Vernier Labquest with a probe monitor the change of temperature for different
combustible material. Two well-known material will be used : Benzoic acid for calibration, and Naphthalene to run the experiment.

The objective of this experiment is to calculate heat capacity of a calorimeter system and determine the heat of combustion (enthalpy) of naphthalene by using a combustion apparatus.
In this experiment, you will study;
- Heat capacity of a calorimeter ,
- Heat of combustion of a given substance due to the temperature increase in the calorimeter.
The calorimeter system consists of a constant volume reaction chamber in an insulated outside chamber, which is filled with water and designed as not to allow to heat exchange with its outside environment. The heat caused by burning of the substance with oxygen completely is called heat of combustion (enthalpy of combustion) of that substance. Heat capacity (Ccal ) of the calorimeter
system is found by the following relation:
where, Q is the heat absorbed by the calorimeter and ΔT is the temperature change of the calorimeter.
